8 Singaporean Artists Who’ve Made It Beyond Singapore
Hollywood recently set the blockbuster movie Crazy Rich Asians in sunny Singapore, which begs the question – which other actors have made a name for themselves across the straits?
An actress, singer, and model that needs no introduction in the local scene, Fann Wong is an industry veteran since starting in 1994. In 2002, Fann became the first Singaporean actress to play a major role in a Hollywood production as Chon Lin in Shanghai Knights. She has since been nominated for seven international awards, winning four of them.
A singer-songwriter who has sold more than thirty million records, Stefanie has achieved widespread popularity in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. She has released twelve studio albums from 2000 to 2017 and has won three international accolades during that time.
If you’ve ever heard the 1998 National Day Parade theme song “Home”, then you have Kit’s voice to thank for that. A singer, actress, writer, and creative consultant – Kit has been active in the industry since 1993. She has five international awards to her name, and boast 25 albums under her discography. With seven-stage performances done across Hong Kong and China, Kit isn’t slowing down anytime soon as she recently performed at the Esplanade Theatre in November 2018.
The 37-year-old singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor started his career by releasing his debut album in 2003. He has released thirteen albums from 2003 to 2017 and has won three national awards in Taiwan and one in Hong Kong. As an actor, he has been involved in three films, two television series and was invited to be a judge on two television shows as well.
Starting her career in 1997, the singer, songwriter and record producer has eleven Mandarin albums and five English albums to her name till date. She has won 14 awards throughout her career, three of which coming from Taiwan. Her popularity stems from her fanbase mainly from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The 55-year-old actress will always be remembered for her role as Margaret Phua in MediaCorp’s longest-running television sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd. She has since gone on to act in Netflix’s Marco Polo as Xie Daoqing and Hollywood’s Crazy Rich Asians as Kerry Chu. She has also been nominated for various awards in Asia for her works in Theatre (Drama and Musicals).
Yet another actor who has made his rounds in Hollywood, Ng Chin Han started his career in 1988 and most recently played the role of Zhai Long Ji in the blockbuster film Skyscraper alongside Dwayne Johnson “The Rock”. He also starred in other hit movies like The Dark Knight, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Independence Day: Resurgence and Ghost in the Shell. TV series appearances include Lethal Weapon, Marco Polo, Arrow and many more. He was also a voice actor for the video game Sleeping Dogs.
The 34-year-old film director and film producer struck gold with his debut film ILO ILO, which won the prestigious Camera d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. This also earned him the Achievement in Directing award at the 2013 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and the 50th Golden Horse Award for Best Feature Film and Best New Director. He has made nine short films from 2005 to 2013 amongst his awards.
