I know that we’re already halfway through the year so you might be asking, “why this article now?”. Well, that’s because from now till the end of the year, Singapore’s A-listers are making pretty epic comebacks to the cinemas!
Let’s get to the list of 5 upcoming Singaporean movies this 2019.
1. Wet Season – Anthony Chen

After 6 years, Cannes’ Camera d’Or winner Anthony Chen will be back with his second feature film ‘Wet Season’ this year. Writer and director of the film Anthony Chen said that the story will follow a 40-year-old woman who’s in the middle of a crisis and her journey of rediscovery. The film stars Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler. This film is definitely one of the most highly anticipated Singaporean movies of 2019.
2. Revenge of the Pontianak – Glen Goei and Gavin Yap

3. Mr Kiasu The Movie – mm2 Entertainment and Johnny Lau

There are still very little updates on the progress of this film, but mm2 Entertainment initially announced that the legendary local comic book would be adapted into a live-action film set to hit the big screens in 2019. The cast and crew are yet to be announced but according to Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore, there are chances of actor Chew Chor Meng (who played Mr. Kiasu in the 2001 sitcom) having a cameo in the film. Time to hype up 90s kids!
4. Circle Line – Chua Jing Du

Branded as ‘Singapore’s first monster flick’, ‘Circle Line’ will depict a group of people walking in a train tunnel who then become prey for a creature. I’m hoping the film gives some insight into why this particular line regularly breaks down during peak hours. Circle Line is written and directed by Chua Jing Du and it stars Jesseca Liu and Patrick Li.
5. Tiong Bahru Social Club – Tan Bee Thiam
Tiong Bahru Social Club is a comedy film directed by Tan Bee Thiam. Sources state that the film will have comedic elements that poke fun at Singapore’s Happiness Index and inter-country rankings. We’re hoping to get good laughs weaved in with a strong message in this film! Tiong Bahru Social Club stars Thomas Pang, Goh Guat Kian, and Jalyn Han.
